Inventive Findings

One of the special aspects of Jayne Redman’s jewelry is the way she combines form and function in her designs, creating unusual findings and assembly processes. Jayne will demonstrate her original engineering ideas and teach you how to apply them to your own work. She will consult with each of you to help you create concepts that are unique to your jewelry.

This workshop will focus on ways to make tools and jigs to form 3 dimensional shapes and unique findings including ear wires, linkage systems, and clasps. You will learn time saving ways of measuring, cutting, connecting and forming sheet and wire.

You will make a series of tools that will allow you to measure, cut, and bend wire accurately in coils or circles and straight lengths. Using these tools Jayne will show you how to make her award-winning signature S-Twist ear wire as well as other variations of single curved ear wires. You will make several variations of jigs for reverse curve ear wires and linkage systems of your own design. These methods can also be used for perfectly duplicating cloisonné wires.

You will make forming rods for sheet metal. These tools will include a “u” tool for conforming both sides of sheet at the same time over a metal rod, pushing tools that help conform sheet metal shapes that are close together, and a fingernail tool that will slide over and under shapes to be bent and also assist in closing loops.

You will modify pliers to create perfect loops with accurate inside diameters, tapered tube crimps to attach tubular clasps to chain or neck wire coils, notches in handmade ear posts, and make all purpose fine tapered flat and flat-oval pliers and bent chain nose pliers.

You will learn how to use Aquaplast – a thermal reactive plastic – to make forming tools, handles for tools, dapping molds, wire jigs, and holding devices for stone setting.

You will leave the workshop with the knowledge to comfortably modify existing tools and invent tools and jigs of your own design. You will be able to make exact duplicates of your forms and findings, enhancing your craftsmanship and adding appeal to your jewelry.

Making Multiples With Blanking Dies

One-piece blanking dies allow you to easily cut out precise duplicate shapes from silver, gold and other non-ferrous sheet metals. Jayne Redman has been using this method for her own production jewelry for 18 years and has developed ways of creating dies and blanking multiples that dramatically speed up the production process. In this workshop you will learn how to develop patterns for this process and the method of sawing dies from flat stock tool steel. You will be amazed at how quickly you can go from original idea to duplicated shape as you make and use your own blanking dies during class. Jayne will be demonstrating her own inventive methods of forming, connecting, and engineering.

This is a process oriented not project oriented workshop although if you have a specific design in mind Jayne would be happy to work with you to problem solve. Please feel free to contact her at jayneredmanjewelry.com with questions.

* We will be using Susan Kingsley’s book, Hydraulic Die Forming for Jewelers and Silversmiths, as a reference.

Jayne Redman® Rotational Bench Pin

Jayne Redman® Rotational Bench Pin

The Jayne Redman® Rotational Bench Pin is the perfect work surface for your jeweler’s bench. The interchangeable surfaces are aluminum and purple heart wood. Both the aluminum and large wood surfaces are 5 inches wide and 6 inches long. The new Mini Pin and Ring Pin in purple heart wood are 3 inches wide and 5 inches long.

Three base configurations are available. The Standard Base is designed to be attached with screws to the top of your work bench. The Dovetail Base slides onto a Dovetail Mounting Plate that is attached to the front of your work bench. Both bases can be rotated 360 degrees. The rotational aspect is particularly useful when sawing blanking dies as shown in the videos on the Tools page. The third base configuration is a simple stationary one with a single Universal Mounting Bracket attached to the front of your bench. See photos of each configuration in the Bench Pin Use Guide PDF.
The Jayne Redman® Rotational Bench Pin is made in Maine, USA.

The Jayne Redman® Rotational Bench Pin System is available from the Tools Shop or Rio Grande.
